Weekly Message May 19, 2014

Dear Members and Friends of St. Luke’s:

Vestry Notes:  We met on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.  Financially for the month of April we received $8,667.42 and had to spend $15,322.37 which gave us a deficit of $6,654.95.  Some of the big expenses (insurance, oil) will not occur in May.  That’s a relief.

We are looking ahead to some events:

1.    Parish Luncheon Party, Sunday September 7.  We have a lot for which we are thankful so we are going to celebrate.  Greg H. Strong is chairing the Party Committee.  If you would like to help, give him a call at 813-8979.

2.    Our Tag Sale fund raiser will be Saturday, September 20.  Olu has been doing most of the work for a few years.  It’s time for more people to help, especially getting ads for the journal and vendors to sell.

3.    Spirit of Beacon Day is Sunday, September 28.  We need ideas for our exhibit and volunteers to host our St. Luke’s booth.

4.    Whitsunday, June 8 will be our last Sunday school classes until September.  During the summer we will be revitalizing the whole program.  Please consider being a teacher.

Our summer style of worship begins Sunday, June 22 and we start planning for our year ahead.

God’s blessings be with you.

Sincerely,

Edwin H. Cromey

Vicar

Weekly Message 2/25/2014

Dear Members and Friends of St. Luke’s:

I know that Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 5, is several days away.  Rather than talk about it at the last minute, I wish to do so now.

The Church suggests observing Lent “by self-examination and repentance, by prayer, fasting and self-denial, and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.”  (BCP p. 265).  At services next Sunday I will elaborate on these suggestions.

During the course of Lent I am favoring the work Episcopal Relief and Development.  They have provided us with a book of Lenten meditations and mite boxes if you wish to contribute to their good work.  To learn more about them on the internet go to www.episcopalrelief.org.  These items plus a prayer card and bookmark can be picked up after Sunday services.  I really want St. Luke’s to have a holy Lent … thus a joyous Easter.

Have you seen the Great Hall lately?  It’s beautiful, especially with the floor so wonderfully treated, but we are not finished.  The curtain for the stage is going to be replaced (after many, many, many years) and the Vestry agreed to purchase 100 new chairs, nicely padded for better comfort and better appearance.  The cost is $22 per chair totaling $2,200.  If you wish to make a donation towards this purchase it would be very welcome.  I thought I would buy 2 chairs, “Hers and His” for Pam and me.

Assisting at Sunday services are:

  • 8:00 a.m.
    • Usher: Pat Guarino
    • Lector & Chalice: Ronda DeVido
  • 10:00 a.m.
    • Ushers: Rachel Ray & Olu Akiwumi-Assani
    • Acolytes: Jonathan Costa & Derek Betz
    • Lector: Evelyn Akiwumi-Assani
    • Chalice: Kate Bushek
    • Altar Guild: Lisa & Greg Strong
    • Host: Lisa Strong

God’s blessings be with you.

Sincerely,
Edwin H. Cromey, Vicar

Weekly Message 2/19/2014

Dear Members and Friends of st. Luke’s:

I am glad that I like snow because we certainly have a lot of it, beautiful but inconvenient.  The painters cannot begin their work in the church until March 3.  So we must continue our Sunday worship downstairs in the parish house.  I thought it went well last Sunday and I am sure it will continue to be so for as long as we must be there.

Sunday, instead of using the stairs to get to the services you may find it easier to use the handicap ramps further left of the door entrance.  Last Sunday at 10:00 a.m., in closer quarters the singing was great.

Assisting this week are:

  • 8:00 a.m.
    • Usher: Pam Cromey
  • 10:00 a.m.
    • Ushers: Greg H. Strong & Jerry Van Slyke
    • Acolytes: Greg S. Strong & Brianna Betz
    • Lector: Carolyn Quoma
    • Chalice: Pam Carpenter & Ronda DeVido
    • Altar Guild: Bev Turcy &  Roxanne Meyer
    • Host: Lisa Strong

Now there are only 9 more shopping days before Lent as it begins Ash Wednesday, March 5.  We will have two services – 12:15 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. using the proper liturgy on page 264 of the prayer book and the imposition of ashes for those who wish them.

May I remind you that I will hold a Bible class on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. beginning March 8.  Please bring your Bible and an open mind and a willingness to share your thoughts so we can learn from each other.

A book of Lenten meditations from Episcopal Relief and Development will be available beginning next Sunday.  Our prayer book states, “I invite you therefore, in the name of the Church to the observance of a holy Lent …”  May it be so for us.

God’s blessings be with you.

Sincerely,
Edwin H. Cromey

P.S.  Vestry will meet this Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
